Simeulue, Indonesian regency in Aceh province.
Simeulue occupies an island territory of 1,838 square kilometers located 150 kilometers from the western coast of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean.
The formation of Simeulue as an independent regency occurred in 1999 when it separated from West Aceh Regency to focus on local development priorities.
The population of 93,762 residents communicates in three principal languages: Devayan, Sigulai, and Leukon, different from those used in northern Sumatra.
The administrative center of Sinabang provides statistical services and maintains records of demographic data for all ten districts within the regency.
Local oral tradition called smong contains instructions for evacuation during earthquakes, which saved numerous lives during the 2004 seismic event.
