Gili Meno, Island in North Lombok, Indonesia
Gili Meno is a small island in the Indian Ocean, part of a group of three Gili Islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia. It is surrounded by white sand beaches, with coral reefs along the shore and a small saltwater lake in the interior.
The island has been home to small fishing communities for centuries, living mainly from fishing, coconut farming, and seaweed cultivation. Tourism arrived late, which is why traditional ways of life are still visible across the island today.
Gili Meno has a turtle sanctuary run by locals, where visitors can watch young turtles swimming before they are released into the sea. Inland, a small saltwater lake called Danau Tasik is home to kingfishers and herons, and it can be reached on foot through coconut groves.
There are no cars or motorbikes on the island, so getting around is done on foot or by horse-drawn carriage. Boats connect Gili Meno to neighboring islands and Lombok, and crossings tend to be smoother in the early evening when the sea is calmer.
The saltwater lake Danau Tasik in the island's interior has an unclear origin, and locals have believed for generations that its waters carry healing properties. The lake sits far enough from the beach that most visitors never find it.
