Bayan Beleq Mosque

Bayan Beleq Mosque is a house of worship in Bayan village, North Lombok Regency, built using traditional construction methods. The structure measures about 9 by 9 meters and combines bamboo, hardened clay, and stone to form a solid building.

The building was constructed in 1634 and became the first mosque erected on Lombok Island during the initial spread of Islam. This role made it a significant point in the island's religious history.

The three-tiered structure embodies the Sasak people's philosophical understanding of head, body, and legs. This symbolism is woven throughout the design and reflects how locals view the world.

The mosque sits about 287 meters above sea level and is best reached by rental vehicle. Planning ahead is wise since the route from the beach areas takes several hours.

The roof uses bamboo in a local Bilhah construction method that shows how regional techniques blend with religious architecture. This handcrafted approach is a rare example of traditional skills passed down over centuries.
