Schaan, Municipal center in Liechtenstein.
Schaan is the most populated municipality in Liechtenstein and sits at roughly 450 meters (1,476 feet) elevation between the Rhine valley to the west and wooded slopes to the east, north of the capital Vaduz. The settlement area spreads across several districts with residential neighborhoods, commercial zones, agricultural fields, and extensive forest areas on the slope.
Roman troops established a military camp here around 15 BC, and excavations uncovered weapons and everyday objects from that period. During the Middle Ages, the settlement developed as a parish center and later gained additional importance through its connection to the railway network.
The name Schaan comes from Rhaeto-Romanic and means slope or incline, referring to the gentle rise between the Rhine plain and the mountains. Locals use the pedestrian zone in the center as a meeting point, where you can shop in small stores or rest by fountains.
Two railway stations connect the town with regional train lines to Switzerland and Austria, with trains running roughly every half hour during the day. The center is easy to explore on foot or by bicycle, and public buses also serve higher residential areas.
Four small areas outside the main town, called enclaves, belong administratively to the municipality even though they are geographically separate. Each of these sections has its own landscape forms, from meadows and vineyards to forested slopes, which you can discover while hiking.
