Zoological Garden of Monaco, Zoological garden in Fontvieille, Monaco
The Zoological Garden of Monaco is a zoo located in Fontvieille built on rocky terrain and spread across four levels, housing around 250 animals from 50 different species. The sloped site creates natural enclosures and zones at different heights for the animals.
The garden was founded in 1954 by Prince Rainier III on the southern side of the Rock of Monaco as a sanctuary for various animal species. This creation reflected the principality's early commitment to wildlife protection and conservation.
The permanent exhibition 'The Prince and His Animals' displays archive photographs and documents showing Prince Rainier III's long dedication to wildlife conservation. Visitors can trace through these materials how the principality's commitment to protecting animals developed over time.
The garden maintains different seasonal schedules, with summer hours from June to September offering extended visiting times from 9:00 to 19:00 with a midday break. Visitors should plan for walking stairs and navigating different levels, as the rocky site requires some physical effort to explore all areas.
This facility exclusively houses animals from donations, abandonments, or customs seizures, maintaining a strict policy against purchasing any creatures for display. This approach makes it a refuge for animals that would have nowhere else to go.
