Podersdorf am See, municipality in Neusiedl am See District, Burgenland, Austria
Podersdorf am See is a market municipality on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl in the Austrian state of Burgenland. The village sits among flat farmland and vineyards that run down to a sandy beach, where a red and white striped lighthouse stands at the water's edge.
The village was founded in the Middle Ages under the name Altdorf and received its current name around 1217, when a landowner named Poth transferred it to Heiligenkreuz Abbey. After World War I, the surrounding region passed from Hungary to Austria and became part of the newly created state of Burgenland.
The name of the village traces back to a medieval landowner named Poth, whose property gave it its identity. Local wine growing remains central to daily life here, and visitors can taste regional wines directly at small family wineries along the edge of the village.
The village is flat and easy to get around on foot or by bike, with marked paths running along the shore and through the surrounding fields. Bike rentals are available in the village itself, and the waterfront has cafes and restaurants where you can take a break between activities.
Podersdorf is known among water sports enthusiasts as one of the top spots in Europe for kiteboarding, thanks to the steady wind that blows across the lake. On a windy day, the sky above the water fills with the colorful kites of riders at every level, from beginners to professionals.
