The Scheffauer is a 2,111 m summit in the Wilder Kaiser range of the Northern Limestone Alps, forming the western buttress of the main crest. Its north and south sides drop in rock faces up to 600 metres high, and at its southern foot lies Lake Hinterstein. The summit cross stands on the boundary between the municipalities of Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser and Kufstein.

The Scheffauer's two marked routes are documented in the Alpine Club guidebooks by Horst Höfler and Jan Piepenstock (Kaisergebirge alpin, 12th edition, 2006) and Pit Schubert (Kaisergebirge extrem, 2000). The southern normal route from Gasthaus Bärnstatt via the Steiner-Hochalm takes 3.5 hours; the northern Widauersteig from the Kaindlhütte takes 2.5 hours. The summit cross marks the municipal boundary between Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser and Kufstein.

The summit cross stands exactly on the boundary between the municipalities of Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser and Kufstein. The south route starts at the Gasthaus Bärnstatt and crosses the Steiner-Hochalm alpine meadow, while the north route begins at the privately run Kaindlhütte on the Steinbergalm. The secured Widauersteig leads through the shaded north flank, and the rock passage known as the Wasserloch is fitted with wire ropes and iron stirrups.

Two marked routes lead to the summit cross. The southern normal route starts at Gasthaus Bärnstatt in Scheffau, passes Steiner-Hochalm and a broad scree field, and takes 3.5 hours; the upper section is exposed, with two rocky passages secured by wire rope and iron stirrups at the Wasserloch. The northern route from the private Kaindlhütte on the Steinbergalm climbs via the Widauersteig (secured Klettersteig, grade A/B) in 2.5 hours. Both need sure-footedness and a head for heights.

The rarely visited Zettenkaiser adjoins to the west, and a difficult ridge hike continues east over the Hackenköpfe to the Sonneck.
