Anton Karg Haus

Anton Karg Haus, Mountain hut in Kaisertal valley, Austria

Anton Karg Haus is a mountain refuge located at 829 meters elevation within the Kaisergebirge range, situated in a valley between the Wilder Kaiser and Zahmer Kaiser peaks. The facility offers sleeping accommodations in both private and communal arrangements, with a dedicated winter room providing extra capacity during cold seasons.

Kufstein municipality transferred the alpine hut to the Austrian Alpine Club's Kufstein branch in 1882, leading to its opening as Hinterbärenbad refuge in July 1883. The facility was later renamed in honor of mountaineer Anton Karg and has continued to serve visitors to the region since its establishment.

The hut is named after a mountaineer and serves as a gathering place where hikers and climbers meet during their journeys in the mountains. Such facilities play a social role in Alpine communities, bringing together people who share a passion for mountain activities.

The refuge is accessible by foot from various hiking trails in the Kaisertal valley, with paths varying in difficulty depending on the season and weather conditions. Visitors should prepare for changing mountain weather and bring sturdy hiking boots and weather-appropriate clothing for a safe and comfortable visit.

The original name Hinterbärenbad comes from brown bears that would cool off in the nearby Kaiserbach stream during summer months in past centuries. This historical connection to local wildlife reflects how geographical names in Alpine regions often connect to the animals and natural features that once defined these landscapes.
