Lustenau, Industrial district in Linz, Austria
Lustenau is a district located east and southeast of Linz center, combining residential zones with commercial areas along the Danube River waterfront. The quarter features a harbor zone containing three separate ports - winter harbor, commercial harbor, and tank harbor - that handle regional trade operations.
The district was incorporated into Linz in 1873 and maintained its status as an independent city district until 2013. That year an administrative reform led to its dissolution and integration into new administrative zones.
The area carries traces of its working-class past, especially around the former brewery whose legacy remains visible in buildings and street names. Today modernization efforts have shaped the district while leaving marks of its industrial roots.
The district is best explored on foot, especially areas with direct Danube access that serve as good orientation points. The harbor zone is partly restricted, so visitors should check ahead which areas are publicly accessible.
Though the district is now integrated into new administrative structures, it once held the largest water surface area ratio of any Linz quarter. This characteristic made it the heart of shipping operations and remains visibly apparent today.
