Öfelekopf, Mountain summit in Leutasch, Austria
Öfelekopf is a mountain summit in the Wetterstein range that stands as a prominent peak in the Tyrolean Alps. The terrain around it features steep rock faces, grassy slopes, and a rocky ridge that connects to a lower companion peak nearby.
The mountain served traditional Alpine routes used by herders and hunters before organized mountaineering developed in the region. First documented climbs began in the 1800s as the sport of mountain climbing grew across Tyrol.
Local mountaineering groups maintain the trails and summit register of Öfelekopf, preserving the mountain climbing heritage of the Tyrol region.
The ascent follows a clearly marked hiking trail that starts from the valley and passes through several elevation zones. Best conditions for a visit are summer months when snow has melted and the paths are reliably passable.
The summit has an unusual double-peak formation with two closely spaced tops that makes the route more interesting. Many visitors overlook the western companion peak nearby, which can be reached by crossing a short ridge without much extra effort.
