Wolfgangsee, Alpine lake in Salzkammergut, Austria
Wolfgangsee is an alpine lake in the Salzkammergut region of Austria, stretching between the mountains Schafberg and Zwölferhorn. The water reaches depths of 114 meters in some places and sits framed by three communities along its shores.
Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg founded a church near the shore in the late 10th century. This foundation eventually gave the body of water its present name.
The inn Weißes Rössl inspired Ralph Benatzky to write his operetta Im Weißen Rössl, which shaped how people imagine the region ever since. Visitors today can still see the building and experience how the story merges with the real location.
Boat connections run between the three main communities of St. Gilgen, Strobl, and St. Wolfgang, operated by Salzburg AG. The vessels sail regularly and allow access to different shoreline areas and starting points for walks.
A central peninsula called die Enge divides the water into two separate sections and forms a natural narrowing along the southern shoreline. This slim passage shapes how the lake appears and influences how water flows between the two basins.
