Wien Hauptbahnhof, Central railway station in Favoriten, Vienna, Austria.
Wien Hauptbahnhof is a central railway station in Favoriten, Vienna, Austria, connecting regional and international trains. The complex extends across several levels with wide platforms under a glass roof structure that brings natural light into waiting areas.
The station officially opened on December 9, 2012, and replaced three old terminal stations that could no longer handle growing traffic. Swiss architect Theo Hotz led the planning work for the new facility.
The name comes from the German word for main station and marks the central hub of Austria's rail network. Travelers use the open halls as meeting points and move through passages lined with international shops and eateries that mirror modern metropolitan life.
The station sits at an elevation of 680 feet (208 meters) and offers access to shopping areas, restaurants, and services on multiple floors. Signage helps travelers navigate between platforms and public areas with shops.
In 2015, the station received recognition as Austria's most beautiful and was praised for its passenger concept. The glass roof can be divided into separate segments that open when needed to allow smoke to escape.
