Klagenfurt War Cemetery, Commonwealth military cemetery in Klagenfurt, Austria
Klagenfurt War Cemetery is a military burial ground that holds nearly 600 graves arranged in uniform rows, each marked by an identical headstone. The stones display regimental insignia and personal details of the soldiers interred there.
British occupation forces gathered burials from across Austria to this cemetery beginning in 1945 after World War II ended. Eight graves from World War I were later moved here during the 1950s.
People from many countries visit to remember and pay respect to those buried here, treating the grounds as a space for personal reflection and remembrance. The ordered rows and maintained landscape create an atmosphere that encourages quiet contemplation.
A brick shelter near the entrance holds a register with information about each burial location and the soldiers interred there. Walking through the grounds lets visitors see the names and details of those laid to rest.
This is the only Commonwealth war cemetery in Austria that holds burials from both World War I and World War II. This rare combination makes it a significant place for remembering different periods of European history.
