For Forest, Art installation in Wörthersee Stadion, Austria
For Forest is an art installation that brought 300 trees of different species including alder, aspen, white willow, hornbeam, field maple, and oak into the Wörthersee Stadion. Enea Landscape Architecture transported and planted these trees, some weighing up to 6 tons, to recreate a Central European forest ecosystem.
Klaus Littmann created this environmental art installation in 2019, transforming the Wörthersee Stadion which was originally built for the 2008 European Football Championship. The project demonstrated how a space designed for sports could temporarily take on an entirely different purpose.
The installation emerged from Max Peintner's drawing showing a forest surrounded by spectators inside a stadium against an industrial background. This artistic vision invites visitors to see the unexpected harmony between natural spaces and places built for human activity.
Visitors should know that access and views change with the seasons as the trees grow and develop. The best time to explore is during daylight hours to fully appreciate the variety of tree species and their different structures.
After the exhibition closed, all trees were moved to a permanent location near the stadium where they continue to grow as a living forest artwork. This relocation meant the installation did not simply disappear but transformed into a lasting woodland.
