Bucklige Welt, Alpine hill region in Lower Austria, Austria.
Bucklige Welt is a hill region in southeastern Lower Austria with gently rolling elevations between 375 and 900 meters. The terrain spans about 30 kilometers and is bordered by the Wechsel, Semmering, and Rosalia mountain ranges.
During the ice age, this region kept its characteristic hill shape because lower elevation prevented extensive glaciation. Only minimal firn accumulated on Hochwechsel, while the valleys remained ice-free.
The name "Bucklige Welt" comes from the word "Buckln," which describes the characteristic hills that shape the landscape. Locals and visitors experience this area as a walking destination where the gentle hills influence daily routines and trail choices.
Certified hiking trails connect different parts of the region, running from Katzelsdorf to Gschaidt and up to the 896-meter Hutwisch peak with its observation tower. Visitors should bring sturdy footwear and weather protection, as conditions change quickly depending on the season and elevation.
The region contains three different climate zones: Illyrian in the southeast, Pannonian at the northern edge, and an alpine transitional zone in central areas. This shift across short distances explains the variety of plants and different hiking experiences depending on the season.
