Spieljoch, Mountain summit in Brandenberg Alps, Austria

Spieljoch is a peak in the Brandenberg Alps that rises to approximately 2,200 meters above sea level. The slopes feature steep rocky sections alternating with meadows that shift in appearance throughout the seasons.

No first ascent is recorded for Spieljoch, since the fertile ground was settled early and the mountain is easily climbed from the south. The brittle west ridge was first descended in 1906 and first ascended in 1911. A route through the north face, opened in 1940, has a UIAA VI+ crux. The Achensee 5-Gipfel-Klettersteig, which includes a secured path to the summit from the Seekarlscharte, opened in 2010.

The Spieljoch lies on the main ridge of the Rofan, and its easiest route, trail no. 413, runs north from the Erfurter Hütte (1831 m) past the Mauritzalm high pasture, with a few fixed-rope sections near the top and about 1½ hours of walking. Since 2010 the secured Seekarlscharte path of difficulty A has formed part of the Achensee 5-Gipfel-Klettersteig. In spring the slopes are used for ski tours from the Erfurter Hütte.

Marked trails lead from Eben am Achensee toward the summit with varying difficulty levels for different skill levels. Mountain huts are located along the route and serve as stopping points for rest and refreshment.

The 150-metre north face and the brittle west ridge, first descended in 1906 and climbed in 1911, are now rarely visited because of rockfall. Since 2010 the secured Seekarlscharte path, graded A, has formed part of the Achensee 5-Gipfel via ferrata.
