Gosauzwang

Gosauzwang is a bridge that carries a brine pipeline across a valley between Hallstatt and Gosau, spanning the Gosaubach stream and the Pass-Gschütt road below. The structure is supported by thin limestone pillars and divided into multiple sections that distribute its weight across the landscape.

The bridge was built in the mid-18th century as an example of early long-distance industrial transport technology. It enabled the movement of brine across difficult terrain from salt mines to processing facilities far away, transforming how the resource was moved.

This structure reflects how salt mining shaped life in the Salzkammergut region for hundreds of years and remains a visible reminder of that heritage. Visitors walking through the area encounter it as a symbol of the industry that once defined the region's economy and identity.

The best views of this structure come from the valley below or from nearby hiking paths that cross the mountainside. Visit during clear weather since the steep paths can become slippery after rain.

The structure underwent a major renovation in 2017 when its steel framework was replaced with aluminum components to reduce weight and improve maintenance. This upgrade shows how historical industrial structures can be adapted to meet modern operational demands.
