Gosauseen, Alpine lakes in Salzkammergut, Austria
The Gosauseen comprises three connected lakes in Upper Austria, surrounded by the Dachstein Mountains. The front lake is the largest and most accessible, while the two others extend deeper into the valley basin.
These lakes formed during the last ice age when glaciers carved deep basins into the limestone bedrock. The Dachstein glacier shaped this landscape over thousands of years, leaving behind the water-filled bowls we see today.
The lakes draw people seeking mountain experiences, who gather at traditional huts nestled in the valleys. You can observe how locals spend their time here, walking the shores and enjoying meals with views of the peaks.
The front lake is reachable by car or bus from Salzburg and has parking available at the entrance. Walking trails circle all three lakes, with the route around the first basin being relatively flat and easy to follow.
The front basin mirrors the north face of the Dachstein glacier, creating a reflection that shifts with the seasons. In spring and autumn, when light hits at lower angles, this mirroring effect becomes especially striking.
