Mandlkogel, Mountain summit in Annaberg-Lungötz, Austria.
Mandlkogel is a mountain summit at 2279 meters (7475 ft) within the Gosaukamm range of the Dachstein massif, located at the border between Salzburg and Upper Austria. The peak offers open views across the surrounding Alpine landscape and connects to nearby peaks through a network of established hiking routes.
In 1913, Austrian mountaineer Paul Preuß died while attempting the first ascent of the northern ridge, marking a significant moment in Alpine climbing history. This incident highlighted the challenges and risks of mountaineering in this region during the early 20th century.
The mountain forms part of Austria's geological heritage, with peak formations of Dachstein reef limestone from the Upper Triassic period. These formations shape the appearance of the entire Gosaukamm range and attract geologists and hikers interested in Alpine rock structures.
The main hiking route starts from Pommerbauer parking area and passes through Stuhlalm, taking around four hours to reach the summit. Good physical fitness and solid footing skills are needed, though the route is manageable for experienced hikers.
Several sections of the ascent traverse unprotected climbing paths through alpine meadows scattered with large boulders and native high-altitude plant life. These passages give the route a rougher, less manicured feel compared to many other Alpine peaks nearby.
