Granatium

Granatium, Mining museum and exhibition center in Radenthein, Austria.

The Granatium is a mining museum in Radenthein with multiple exhibition areas and underground galleries displaying garnets and mining equipment. The collection includes specimens from European sources and shows the variety of this mineral found in the area.

The site opened in 2008 and stands on the grounds of former garnet mines that operated until 1909 in the Carinthian region. Creating the museum was a way to bring back the hundred-year-old mining tradition to public attention.

The place preserves the garnet mining heritage through exhibitions and activities where visitors can understand the work of past miners. You can see how important this raw material was to the region and how people once worked with it.

The museum is open from May to October with summer hours from 10:00 to 19:00 and offers guided visits. Tours are available in multiple languages, making the visit accessible to international guests.

Visitors can dig for garnets in designated areas and process their finds with professional equipment. The stones can be polished by skilled workers who handle the finishing work on site.
