Heiligenkreuzerhof, Medieval chapel and residential complex in Innere Stadt, Austria
The Heiligenkreuzerhof is a residential complex with two connected courtyards, stone masonry, and a Baroque chapel located between two streets. The site contains multiple older buildings arranged around the inner courts.
The complex dates to the 12th century and was originally connected to the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz. It underwent major reconstruction between 1659 and 1676 when it received its current Baroque form.
The Bernardikapelle chapel shows Baroque decorative works that shaped Viennese artistic development in the 17th century. You can see these works while walking through the courtyard.
The complex functions as a passage building with entrances at both ends, allowing people to walk through between two streets. Access is free and the passage guides you past residential buildings and the chapel.
Austrian writer Helmut Qualtinger, a prominent figure in Austria's literary and cabaret scene, lived here from 1975 to 1986. A memorial plaque on the building marks his years in this residence.
