Alte Schmiede

Alte Schmiede is a cultural center on Schönlaterngasse in Vienna's First District, housed in a traditional building with a vaulted cellar. The cellar serves as the main event space and accommodates readings, concerts, and exhibitions of various kinds.

The building originally housed a blacksmith workshop that operated until 1969, when it was transformed into a cultural venue. Since then, it has served Vienna's art scene and become an established hub for contemporary artistic events.

The center is open Monday through Friday from early afternoon and welcomes visitors to attend events. Plan your visit outside regular business hours or check ahead for upcoming programs, as the schedule changes regularly.

Inside the center is a gallery dedicated to literary magazines that preserves a large collection of publications and produces its own newspaper called Der Hammer. This collection provides insight into the literary scene and reveals which publications emerge in Vienna and beyond.
