Alte Schmiede is a cultural center on Schönlaterngasse in Vienna's First District, housed in a traditional building with a vaulted cellar. The cellar serves as the main event space and accommodates readings, concerts, and exhibitions of various kinds.

The blacksmith workshop was installed in the house at Schönlaterngasse 9 in 1880. In 1975 Reinhard Urbach, Rudolf Pritz and Kurt Piak conceived the Alte Schmiede as a venue for readings, exhibitions and concerts within the Kunstverein Wien, founded in 1969 on the initiative of the city's cultural office. After a 2007 renovation the former workshop became a second event room; since autumn 2010 the main hall has been in the cellar vault.

The name recalls the smithy installed in the house at Schönlaterngasse 9 in 1880, which since a 2007 conversion serves as a second event room. The Literarisches Quartier and Musikwerkstatt became meeting points for Austrian writers and musicians, and the venue also organises the Literatur im Herbst festival.

Inside the center is a gallery dedicated to literary magazines that preserves a large collection of publications and produces its own newspaper called Der Hammer. This collection provides insight into the literary scene and reveals which publications emerge in Vienna and beyond.
