Museo della Fantasia

Museo della Fantasia is an art museum in Vienna's Innere Stadt featuring surrealist and visionary works from the post-war era onward. The exhibitions occupy the richly decorated rooms of Palais Pálffy, which has housed this collection since 2011.

The museum emerged from discussions between artist Ernst Fuchs and publisher Gerhard Habarta, opening in 2011 with presidential support. This founding established a center for Vienna's tradition of fantastic realism within a historic palace.

The exhibition spaces showcase works from multiple artistic movements that shaped Vienna's late-20th-century art scene. Visitors experience the connection between surrealism and local artistic traditions through the works on display.

The entrance leads through a foyer designed by Kurt Welther into reception areas with ticket sales and information desks. The entire building offers wheelchair-accessible exhibition spaces, a museum shop, and straightforward navigation through the rooms.

The foyer displays designs by Kurt Welther that draw from operatic themes, immersing visitors in a fantastical setting from the moment they enter. This artistic introduction subtly prepares guests for the surreal works displayed in the rooms beyond.
