Herzgruft, Chapel of Loreto in Augustinerkirche, Austria
The Loretokapelle contains ornate decorations and monuments within the Augustinian Church, serving as a dedicated space for Habsburg dynasty heart burials.
The chapel's construction was commissioned in 1627 by Empress Eleonora of Mantua, wife of Emperor Ferdinand II, as a replica of Italy's Casa Sancta.
The tradition of placing Habsburg hearts in silver urns within this chapel started with King Ferdinand IV's specific request in his 1654 will.
The chapel opens Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM, with extended hours on weekends, and requires navigating five steps upon entry.
Fifty-four hearts of Habsburg dynasty members rest in this chapel, making it the largest collection of royal cardiac remains in Europe.
