Palmenhaus, Art Nouveau greenhouse in Burggarten, Austria
The Palmenhaus is a steel and glass greenhouse in the Burggarten of the Innere Stadt, featuring Art Nouveau details in its exterior design. The building houses a restaurant, a butterfly collection, and areas with tropical plants.
The building was created between 1901 and 1905 following a design by Friedrich Ohmann. It replaced an earlier classical greenhouse that existed from 1823 to 1826.
The name refers to its original purpose as a place to grow tropical plants and palms for the imperial gardens. Today visitors use it for breaks, watching butterflies, or simply walking through different sections.
The location is easy to access and invites exploration, with various areas for sitting and watching. Visitors should plan time to see all parts of the greenhouse and its collection.
The rear wall of the building incorporates a section of the original Vienna City Wall that was integrated into the modern construction. This connection between medieval fortification and contemporary architecture becomes visible when walking toward the back area.
