Museo della Fantasia, Fantasy art museum in Innere Stadt, Vienna, Austria

The Phantastenmuseum was a permanent exhibition in Palais Pálffy on Josefsplatz in Vienna's Innere Stadt, showing fantastic, surreal and visionary art from the post-war period to the present. It used parts of the Renaissance palace renovated in the 1950s after war damage. The permanent display filled the entire upper floor in twelve themed sections, from Impulse and Akademie to the Wiener Schule des Phantastischen Realismus, alongside documents and portraits of the artists.

The museum grew out of talks between painter Ernst Fuchs and publisher Gerhard Habarta, with plans finalized in 2010 alongside the Österreichisches Kulturzentrum since 1958 in Palais Pálffy. Conversion of the rooms began in autumn 2010 and finished in January 2011. It opened on 15 January 2011 under the honorary patronage of Federal President Heinz Fischer.

The exhibition spaces showcase works from multiple artistic movements that shaped Vienna's late-20th-century art scene. Visitors experience the connection between surrealism and local artistic traditions through the works on display.

The entrance leads through a foyer designed by Kurt Welther into reception areas with ticket sales and information desks. The entire building offers wheelchair-accessible exhibition spaces, a museum shop, and straightforward navigation through the rooms.

The foyer was designed by Kurt Welther, a pupil of Anton Lehmden, around the theme of Mozart's opera "The Marriage of Figaro". The same floor holds a gallery of 150 m² opposite the Figaro concert hall, used for solo exhibitions. The permanent collection fills the whole upper floor, divided into twelve sections.
