Freyschlössl, Medieval tower house on Mönchsberg, Salzburg, Austria
Freyschlössl is a tower house with medieval origins perched on the Mönchsberg overlooking Salzburg, offering twelve rooms spread across multiple levels. The building consists of an old tower core with a modern extension added in the 2010s.
The site was built in the late 13th century as a defensive tower to protect the passage between two mountain ranges. A merchant named Carl von Frey purchased the building in 1862 and converted it into a residence.
The site shows how medieval defensive structures were later converted into homes for wealthy merchants. You can still see today how old walls were combined with modern comforts.
Access to all levels is possible through a modern glass elevator, making it easy to explore the entire house. The grounds offer multiple balconies and terraces where you can overlook the surroundings and the fortress.
The property preserves an original drawbridge, a reminder of its former role as a defensive structure. This rare preserved fortification offers a glimpse into the practical security mechanisms of the medieval era.
