Kupelwieser-Schlössl, Salzburg, Protected tower and house on Mönchsberg, Salzburg, Austria.
Kupelwieser-Schlössl is a neo-Gothic structure combining a tower and residential sections on Mönchsberg's elevated terrain above Salzburg. The building occupies a prominent position on the rocky outcrop that overlooks the city's old town.
The building started as Falkenturm in 1364, a storage tower for hunting falcons, before collapsing in 1863. It was rebuilt shortly after by Josef Achleitner under the new name Marienschlössl.
The property served as a residence for writer Peter Handke from 1979 to 1988, during which he wrote several significant literary works.
The building is privately owned and not open for interior viewing. However, the exterior can be seen from the Mönchsberg pathways and the structure is visible from various viewpoints around the mountain.
Inside the building sits a collection of historical weapons and armor pieces. The assemblage was brought together by industrialist Franz Kupelwieser, whose name the structure now carries.
