Kaunergrathütte, Mountain hut at 2817 meters in Ötztal Alps, Tyrol, Austria.
Kaunergrathütte is a mountain refuge at 2817 meters in the Ötztal Alps, located beneath the Madatschjoch ridge and surrounded by glaciers and peaks. The building accommodates around 57 people across multiple dormitories and private rooms.
The Austrian Alpine Club founded this mountain refuge in 1903 as a vital stopping point for mountaineers exploring the highest regions of Pitztal Valley. Since its establishment, it has developed into a key base for alpine expeditions and crossings.
The hut takes its name from the Kaunergrat ridge that dominates the landscape around it, and visitors notice the simple mountain style of the building that blends with the rocky surroundings. The space reflects how people have lived in high altitude environments for generations, with locals and climbers sharing meals and stories in the common rooms.
Various marked trails lead to the hut, with the shortest route from Plangeroß requiring about three and a half hours of climbing through alpine terrain. The path is clearly marked and requires basic mountain gear and physical fitness for high-altitude walking.
The refuge runs entirely on renewable energy through photovoltaic panels and a rapeseed oil cogeneration plant, receiving environmental certification in 2016. This combination makes it an early example of sustainable mountain accommodation at extreme altitude.
