Wurmtaler Kopf, Mountain summit in Ötztal Alps, Austria
Wurmtaler Kopf is a mountain summit in the Ötztal Alps located at 3255 meters. The peak features steep rock ridges and offers open views across the surrounding Kaunergrat mountain range.
The peak became known in the late 1800s as Austrian alpine tourism began to develop in the Pitztal region. Interest in climbing grew as mountaineers started exploring the surrounding ridges.
The mountain reflects traditional Alpine mountaineering culture, where local guides pass their knowledge of climbing routes through generations of outdoor enthusiasts.
You can reach 2200 meters using the cable car from Mandarfen, then walk to the top, or start directly from the valley for a longer route. Either way, you need to be comfortable moving over steep rock terrain.
A small bivouac shelter sits just below the peak to provide emergency shelter when weather turns unexpectedly bad. Many climbers have used this simple structure to wait out sudden storms or cold spells.
