Taschachferner, Alpine glacier in Pitztal Valley, Austria
Taschachferner is a glacier in the Ötztal Alps composed of two separate ice masses. The eastern section is noticeably larger than the western part, both situated in a high alpine environment.
The glacier divided into two distinct sections near Petersenspitze peak toward the end of the 20th century. This separation represented a major shift in the structure of the ice mass during that period.
The Taschachhaus mountain refuge, established in 1873, functions as a critical base for German Alpine Club training and high-altitude expeditions.
Access is available through several routes, including a multi-hour hike from Mittelberg or by using the Riffelseebahn cable car from Mandarfen. The best time to visit is during warmer months when trails have the least snow coverage.
A glacial lake formed between the two ice masses after 2003, marked by red-brown moraine bands. These colored rock streaks develop as debris from the slow movement of both sections converges.
