Košutica / Loibler Baba, Mountain summit on the Austrian-Slovenian border in Karawanks
Košutica is a mountain summit on the Austrian-Slovenian border in the Karawanks with a height of about 1968 meters and symmetrical slopes on both sides. The peak features a distinctive double summit structure, with several marked trails approaching from different valleys.
The area was historically shaped by water mills along the Ribnitzbaches stream, with about two dozen serving local communities until the late 20th century. The mountain pass has served for centuries as a key link between the valleys on both sides of the border.
The name "Baba" comes from Slovenian and means "old woman," a reference that shapes how locals and visitors perceive the mountain. People on both sides of the border recognize this linguistic connection as part of shared regional identity.
The mountain is best reached from Zell-Oberwinkel via the Hainschgraben trail, with parking available near the former Gasthaus location. Hikers should prepare for changing weather and bring sturdy footwear along with a map or GPS device.
At the summit stands a registration box where hikers can sign and leave stamps, forming a kind of peak logbook. On clear days the Julian Alps and High Tauern mountains are visible, emphasizing the geographic position between these major ranges.
