Wertatscha, Mountain peak in Karawanks range, Austria and Slovenia
Wertatscha is a mountain peak in the Karawanks range straddling the border between Austria and Slovenia, rising to about 2,180 meters. The summit displays limestone and dolomite rock formations on its northern and southern slopes.
The peak became more accessible for cross-border hikers after Slovenia joined the European Union in 2004. This change allowed for better cooperation in maintaining and developing trails on both sides.
The mountain carries different names on each side of the border, reflecting the linguistic traditions of the region. Visitors encounter this cultural division while exploring the area.
Hikers can reach the summit from the Ljubelj pass on the Austrian side or from Završnica valley, with ascent times of about three to four hours. Sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are important due to changing mountain conditions.
The north face drops steeply for about 600 meters and offers climbing routes of varying difficulty. The surrounding region also provides opportunities for ski touring and backcountry skiing.
