Stol / Hochstuhl, Mountain summit between Carinthia and Slovenia.
Stol is a mountain summit located between Carinthia and Slovenia at 2,237 meters elevation with a distinctive peaked form. The northern face displays steep limestone cliffs while the southern slopes consist of gentler grassland.
The first documented ascent took place in 1794 when Count Franz von Hohenwart reached the summit following an invitation from mountaineer Sigmund Zois. This early climb marked the beginning of organized mountaineering activity in the region.
The mountain carries two names that describe its distinctive shape: Stol means 'chair' in Slovenian, while Hochstuhl translates to 'high chair' in German. These names reflect how locals have long seen the peak through the lens of familiar household objects.
Several hiking paths ascend from both the Austrian and Slovenian sides, with difficulty levels varying depending on the chosen route. The Prešeren Lodge provides accommodation for those planning to spend the night on the mountain.
The mountain serves as a natural watershed separating the flow of the Sava and Drava river systems across the Austrian-Slovenian border. This geographical feature makes it a natural boundary between two distinct landscapes.
