Rainerkaserne, Military barracks in Elsbethen, Austria
Rainerkaserne is a military barracks complex in Elsbethen with buildings arranged around a central drill ground and featuring marble portals. A dedicated sports field is located to the south of the main area.
The facility was built between 1938 and 1940 and served as Camp Truscott under American control after 1945. It passed to the Austrian Armed Forces in 1955.
The buildings display features of Alpine building traditions with wooden balconies and distinctive shutters that reflect mountain construction methods of the region. These architectural details continue to shape how the complex looks today.
The 17.8-hectare property is now under private use while protected structures are preserved. Check access possibilities beforehand, as parts of the site may not be freely open to visitors.
The facility remains the only military installation from its 1938-1940 construction period that has kept its original architectural layout in Austria. This structural integrity makes it a rare example from that era.
