Schloss Emslieb - Morzg, Protected castle in Morzg, Austria

Schloss Emslieb stands at Hellbrunner Allee 65 in Salzburg, built in 1618 by Jakob Hannibal von Hohenems as a reduced version of the Palazzo Gallio in Gravedona. Above the entrance is the Hohenems coat of arms, and above the central balcony that of Archbishop Markus Sittikus. Severe alterations have cost the small castle its original rectangular central block with hipped roof and slightly projecting towers with pyramid roofs.

Built in 1618 by Jakob Hannibal von Hohenems, nephew of Archbishop Markus Sittikus, as a reduced copy of the Palazzo Gallio in Gravedona. After his uncle died in 1619, the unpopular Jakob Hannibal had to leave Salzburg; in 1620 Paris von Lodron took the castle and gave it to his councillor Thomas Perger, who was allowed to call himself Perger von Emslieb. The Perger family held it until 1710, followed by the Freiherren von Grimming (1713–1778) and Ernestine Fürstin Esterházy (1797–1811).

The name Emslieb comes from Thomas Perger, whom Archbishop Paris von Lodron allowed to call himself Perger von Emslieb after taking over the castle in 1620. The Perger family held the building until 1710. In the interwar period it was briefly known as Villa Strongfort. Above the entrance is the Hohenems coat of arms, and above the central balcony that of Archbishop Markus Sittikus.

Schloss Emslieb stands at Hellbrunner Allee 65, on the tree-lined avenue running from Salzburg toward Hellbrunn; the Meierhof beside it has been used separately since 1930. A castle axis runs parallel to the Fürstenweg toward the Salzach floodplain woods, marked today by a gappy row of fruit trees. The oval stone-lined pond in the former garden is now kept as a habitat for amphibians.

The crown grotto of the Hellbrunn water features is a much-reduced copy of Schloss Emslieb, built in 1618 by Jakob Hannibal von Hohenems as a smaller version of the Palazzo Gallio in Gravedona. Above the entrance sits the Hohenems coat of arms; above the central balcony, that of Archbishop Markus Sittikus.
