Schloss Montfort, Hellbrunn

Schloss Montfort in Salzburg-Morzg is a Baroque castle with two perpendicular wings and mansard roofs situated at the foot of Golser Hill northwest of Hellbrunn Palace. The building combines older structures with 18th-century modifications that reflect its use as a hunting lodge.

The estate was first documented in 1334 and received the name Schloss Montfort around 1700 when Maria Anna, Countess of Montfort, acquired and expanded it. This transformation marked the shift from a medieval fortification to a noble residence.

The castle shows how Salzburg nobility shaped their country estates by combining medieval foundations with 18th-century hunting purposes. From the outside, visitors can see how such properties were designed and what role they played in the lives of the upper classes.

The castle is privately owned and closed to visitors, so it is important to respect the privacy of residents. It is best viewed from outside while exploring the surrounding landscape at the foot of Golser Hill.

The estate included a model farm under Archbishop Colloredo's ownership that experimented with agricultural innovations of the late 18th century. This combination of hunting castle and experimental farm reveals how the nobility explored new farming methods of the period.
