Seestadt Aspern, Urban development district in Vienna, Austria
Seestadt Aspern is a neighborhood in northeastern Vienna with residential buildings, shops, and an artificial lake at its center. The 240-hectare (593-acre) area is designed for around 25,000 residents and combines modern architecture with green spaces.
The area was an important airfield serving Vienna through both World Wars until the 1980s. The transformation into a modern residential district started in 2009 and completely reshaped the site.
The neighborhood honors notable women through street names such as Ada Lovelace and Janis Joplin, reflecting a commitment to gender equality. These choices shape how the place feels and show the values of those who planned it.
The area connects to Vienna through the U2 underground line at Seestadt and Aspern Nord stations, plus seven bus lines and S80 train service. Visitors will find easy public transportation to explore the neighborhood and reach other parts of the city.
The neighborhood is home to HoHo Wien, a high-rise building using advanced wooden hybrid construction techniques. This approach to building shows an innovative way to construct tall structures with sustainable materials.
