Piz Val Gronda, Mountain peak in Samnaun Group, Switzerland and Austria
Piz Val Gronda is a mountain summit in the Samnaun Group that straddles the border between Switzerland and Austria. The peak rises to 2812 meters and divides the cantons of Graubünden and Vorarlberg.
The mountain has been reached through hiking paths from both sides of the border for many years. Access was significantly improved by a modern cable car system that opened in December 2013.
The Heidelberger Hütte, positioned at 2264 meters, represents the only German Alpine Club mountain shelter situated on Swiss territory near Piz Val Gronda.
The hiking routes to the summit are well marked from both Ischgl and Samnaun. The path from Heidelberger Hütte at 2264 meters provides a good option for reaching the peak in reasonable time.
The mountain shares its name with two other peaks in the Alps: one in Italy's Ortler-Alps at 2880 meters and another in Obersaxen, Switzerland at 2820 meters.
