Partenen

Partenen is a small village in the Montafon valley in Vorarlberg, situated at about 1050 meters elevation and surrounded by high mountains and lakes. The village has quiet streets lined with timber and stone houses, with the Ill river flowing through the peaceful setting.

The village was first documented in 1499 and historically belonged to various rulers before becoming part of Vorarlberg in 1861. During the 1800s, hydroelectric power stations were built, shaping the local economy and providing work for residents to the present day.

The name Partenen comes from a word meaning a gentle, slow path, reflecting how locals view life here. Residents live closely with nature, using water and mountains in their daily work, and they welcome visitors to experience this mountain way of living.

A modern hydroelectric power plant called Obervermuntwerk II is cleverly hidden in the mountains, showing how the community uses water to create energy. The facility is designed to blend into the landscape, and visitors can learn how mountain water is transformed into electricity.
