Vorderkaiserfelden Hut, Mountain hut in Kaiser Mountains, Austria
The Vorderkaiserfelden Hut is a mountain hut on the southwest slope of the Zahmer Kaiser in Tyrol, sitting at around 1,384 meters (4,540 ft). It offers sleeping places in dormitories, double rooms, and multibed rooms for hikers who want to spend a night in the Kaiser Mountains.
The hut was founded in 1889 as a small shelter with only a handful of beds for mountaineers in the Kaiser Mountains. Over the following decades it grew into a recognized stop for hikers coming from across the region.
The hut belongs to the Oberland section of the German Alpine Club, which means members pay reduced overnight fees. In the wood-paneled common room, hikers from different countries sit together and share a meal after a long day on the mountain.
The hut can be reached from several trailheads in the area, and basic mountain experience is recommended before setting out. A visit between June and September generally offers the best trail conditions.
In September 2023, structural problems were found in the building, leading to plans for a replacement structure on the same site. Anyone visiting now is seeing the hut as it stands before that construction begins.
