Casino-Stadion Hohe Warte, building in Vienna, Austria
Casino-Stadion Hohe Warte is an association football venue in Vienna located on a hill in the Döbling district with a natural grass pitch. The stadium contains multiple stands and viewing areas, with the main stand built in 1976 and a current seating capacity of roughly 4,500.
The stadium opened in 1921 on land where a former brick factory once stood and was initially one of Europe's largest football arenas with capacity for up to 80,000 spectators. Over the following decades the facility declined due to wear and safety concerns, with the main stand closed in 2017 because of structural wood rot damage.
The venue is easily accessible by subway and train from Wien Heiligenstadt station as well as by bus and tram from different parts of the city. Visitors should note that only certain seating areas are currently accessible and it is wise to check current opening and safety information before visiting.
In the 1920s the grounds also hosted opera performances and boxing matches, including a major open-air opera production with hundreds of performers and exotic animals. This versatility reveals that the venue served purposes far beyond what it is known for today.
