Leobnerhütte, Mountain hut in Vordernberg, Austria
The Leobnerhütte sits at 1582 meters on the eastern slope of Polster mountain and offers shelter and meals to hikers exploring the Hochschwab region. The building has 20 sleeping places in mattress dormitories and operates daily during the summer months.
The building was originally built as accommodation for miners and was later converted into a tourist lodge. In 1926 the Leoben section of the Austrian Alpine Club took over its management and turned it into a hiking rest stop.
The hut serves traditional Alpine dishes and regional specialties prepared using recipes passed down through generations. Visitors can taste local products like farmer's bread with bacon and typical mountain fare that reflect the region's food heritage.
Access is via hiking path 871 from Präbichl, which connects to multiple routes through forests and alpine meadows. It helps to plan arrival with extra time, as the trails are steep, and checking opening hours beforehand is wise.
The hut was once used by miners who extracted ore in the area below and needed a rest stop during their work. This connection to mining history makes it a place where the industrial past of the Alps remains tangible today.
