Hoher Zinken

Hoher Zinken is a mountain summit in the Salzkammergut region that rises to 2,227 meters and features steep slopes with exposed rock along its hiking routes. The path to the top crosses alpine terrain with challenging sections and views across the surrounding mountain ranges.

The mountain began attracting climbers in the late 19th century and became an established climbing destination in the Austrian Alps. Growing interest from mountaineers turned it into a recognized peak for hikers throughout the region.

Local residents have named the peak after its distinctive sharp shape, which stands out clearly when viewed from various points across the region. This naming reflects how mountain communities in the Salzkammergut identify and relate to their surrounding landscape.

The climb requires good fitness and alpine experience since the route crosses steep terrain with some rope-protected sections. Starting early in the day and monitoring weather conditions is important, as the exposed summit can see conditions change quickly.

On clear days, the Dachstein massif and several peaks of the Osterhorn group are distinctly visible from the summit. This view makes the climb especially rewarding, as visitors can survey multiple recognized mountain systems of the region from a single vantage point.
