Breitenkopfhütte, Mountain refuge in Mieming Mountains, Austria
Breitenkopfhütte is a small mountain shelter in the Mieming range, situated in a remote location at a high altitude. The wooden structure provides basic sleeping accommodation for a handful of visitors and operates without electricity or running water.
The shelter originally served mountain workers extracting minerals from nearby shafts and has been maintained by a German Alpine Club group since 1936. This modest mountain house has provided refuge for climbers and hikers for more than a century.
The mountain hut maintains traditional Alpine shelter practices, requiring visitors to obtain specific keys from the German Alpine Club for access.
To stay overnight, you must arrange access in advance with the managing club group, as the hut is kept locked when unattended. Most visitors approach on foot via day hikes from valleys below.
The building has no electricity and relies entirely on a natural spring for drinking water located some distance away. This extreme simplicity makes it an unusually raw mountain experience compared to modern hut standards.
