Alpe Rauz, Mountain pass station in Klösterle, Austria.
Alpe Rauz is a mountain station at 1629 meters (5,344 feet) serving as a hub in the Ski Arlberg network. The site connects multiple lifts and trails that spread across different sections of this expansive resort area.
Farmers from Liechtenstein used these mountain meadows for grazing cattle over many centuries. The shift from pastoral farming to ski resort came much later, transforming how people used this high altitude land.
The name comes from old farming words meaning land clearing, showing how shepherds and farmers shaped this mountain area long ago. You can still sense this connection to the land when you walk around the buildings and pastures here.
The station sits above 1600 meters and is most easily reached during ski season when lifts are running. Visitors should expect cold mountain weather and come prepared with proper winter gear.
Despite its remote mountain location, the settlement has only 11 buildings spread across about 11 percent of the municipality's land. This makes it one of Austria's highest inhabited places, with remarkably few structures for such a significant ski hub.
