Hochplettspitz, Mountain peak in Salzkammergut, Austria
Hochplettspitz is a mountain peak in the Salzkammergut region that rises between the Mondsee and Attersee lakes. Its slopes feature dense forests and several marked hiking trails that pass through different elevation zones.
The mountain formed approximately 70 to 90 million years ago from cement marl and calcareous sandstone belonging to the Flysch geological zone. This composition continues to shape the landscape and the mountain's character today.
The mountain base connects to the Mondsee pile dwellings, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site representing Stone Age Mondsee culture.
Visitors will find several marked routes offering different difficulty levels based on fitness and available time. Starting early in the day allows plenty of time for exploration and the return descent.
Two small lakes, Egelsee and Ellerwiessee, sit at different elevations on the mountain and form protected wetland areas. These water bodies support specialized plant and animal species adapted to the local environment.
