Erholungsgebiet Wienerberg, Recreation area in Favoriten, Austria
Erholungsgebiet Wienerberg is a recreation area in Favoriten featuring natural forest zones, meadows, and water surfaces including the largest reed bed in southern Vienna. The space spans approximately 120 hectares with varied landscape zones designed for different activities.
In 1967, the City of Vienna acquired this site, which was previously used as a landfill, and transformed it into a recreation area between 1983 and 1995. This conversion demonstrates how industrial land was repurposed into green space for public use.
The area features a natural landscape design that contrasts with formal gardens found elsewhere and serves the recreational needs of Vienna's most densely populated district. Locals use this space for daily walks, sports, and relaxation within green surroundings.
The area is accessible through multiple entry points, primarily via tram line 11 and various bus routes, making it easy to reach the site. The interior features well-marked paths and sports facilities such as football fields and basketball courts suitable for visitors of different abilities.
The southeastern section contains protected dry grasslands declared a natural monument in 1976, providing habitat for endangered species such as the large copper butterfly. This small area demonstrates how natural diversity has been preserved within the transformed site.
