Georg-Emmerling-Hof, Municipal residential complex in Leopoldstadt, Austria.
The Georg-Emmerling-Hof is a residential complex of seven interconnected blocks with six to seven floors located at Obere Donaustraße 97-99. It surrounds a central landscaped courtyard and contains a total of 215 apartments.
The complex was built between 1953 and 1957 during Vienna's post-war reconstruction to address the severe housing shortage. The project was part of the city's effort to rehouse the population after years of destruction.
The facade displays two stone reliefs depicting market and harbor scenes that reflect the area's working life. In the courtyard stands a goat sculpture by Alois Heidel that draws visitors and invites them to linger.
The complex is easily accessible on foot and located in a central area with good public transport connections. The renovations from 2019 to 2022 modernized the infrastructure, making the residential areas comfortable and functional.
The goat sculpture in the courtyard was intentionally made thin to remember the hunger suffered during World War II. This quiet reminder in stone remains a touching memorial to the country's difficult past.
