Katholische Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt

The Katholische Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt is a parish church in Gröbming featuring a distinctive baroque onion dome that shapes the town's skyline. The building measures approximately 42 meters in length and 21 meters in height, with five bells in the tower weighing around 10 tons combined.

The church was built in two phases: the eastern section was completed in 1459, while the western section was added between 1491 and 1500. A modern bell system was installed in 2005, upgrading the tower's equipment.

The church houses a late Gothic winged altar created around 1520 by Master Lienhard Astl, showcasing complex religious scenes with exceptional craftsmanship. The painted panels display scenes from the lives of Jesus and the saints that visitors have observed for centuries.

The church is accessible via Klostergasse street, offering easy entry for visitors wishing to explore the interior. It is advisable to visit during regular opening hours to view the interior and altar.

A Roman gravestone sits near the cross altar, bearing witness to the ancient settlement that once existed at this location. This artifact directly connects the church to the region's distant past.
